Why this exists

Ohio produces an astonishing share of what America eats, builds with, and wears — and almost none of it can be found in one place. A builder who wants Ohio hardwood, a weaver who wants Ohio fleece, a family that wants food grown in its own county: each of them starts from scratch, every time. The Ohio Market is the index that should have existed — every producer of raw materials in the state, everything produced and nothing chemical, gathered under three pillars and six regions.

Market Bulletin Welcome to the Market — pull up a chair. We're just getting started, and we're glad you came by. 565 Ohio producers are listed in the directory — every one of them real, every one of them Ohio.

Everything Ohio makes, grows, and digs — and the people behind it.

The Ohio Market gathers the state's raw-material producers — farms and orchards, sawmills and quarries, fiber growers and mills: everything produced, nothing chemical — and puts them in one place with the neighbors who buy from them, and the stands at the ends of their driveways. A directory answers questions. A market is somewhere you go. This one is built to be visited.

Buy Ohio Yarn

Three words, and they were always true: Ohio grows the fleece and spins the yarn. Eighteen yarn sellers are already in this directory — alpaca and wool farms, hand-spinners with hand-dyed colorways, and working fiber mills in Copley, Peebles, and Sardinia that turn Ohio fleece into yarn you can knit with. Ohio raises one of the largest alpaca herds in the nation; the yarn was never the hard part. Finding it was.

The Season at Hand

October in Ohio

Mid-October finds Ohio at the height of harvest. Corn and soybeans are coming off the fields, the last of the hay is in, and orchard country is heavy with apples and cider. It is the best month of the year to buy from the people in this directory: maple country is quiet but stocked, sawmills are sawing into the cool weather, and fiber growers are sorting the spring clip for the mills.

In the hill country the hardwoods are turning; on the lake plain the grape harvest is wrapping up. County fairs have mostly closed their gates for the year — several of them celebrated anniversaries this fall — and farm stands are shifting to squash, pumpkins, and stored goods. Plant garlic now, before the ground closes. Mind the first frost, and put up what the season gave you.

Watch — Snippets from the Market

Short films, twenty seconds to a few minutes, made with Ohioans — not about them. Hands in the soil, a loom moving, yarn winding off a wheel, a place feeling like itself. Nobody is the star; the crowd is the star. Each snippet pins to its place on The Market Map.

Hands in the Soil

A farm stand at first light in Holmes County — dew, dirt under the nails, the honor box getting its first dollar of the day.

The Loom at Work

Shuttle, beat, breathe. Fiber country at working speed — Ohio fleece becoming cloth one pass at a time.

Snippet · In production

The Forge Breathes

Bellows and coal smoke in a one-man smithy. No narration — just the rhythm a blacksmith's arms know by heart.

Snippet · In production

Yarn, Winding

A spinning wheel in a farmhouse window, a skein coming off the niddy-noddy. The Buy Ohio Yarn story, wordless.

Market Morning

Stalls going up before the town wakes — canopies, crates, chalk on a sign. The sound a Saturday makes.

The Quilting Table

Four generations of hands around one frame. A t-shirt quilt taking shape, square by square, story by story.

The first snippets premiere right here, on this wall. Film something at your stand, bench, or mill? That's how this wall fills.

Make a Day of It

Our sister channel, North Ohio Wild, films the wild half of this state — waterfalls, heron rookeries, lake light, the woods of the northern counties. The Market knows the other half of the same day: the farm stand ten minutes from the trailhead, the mill town on the road home. A waterfall in the morning, a dozen eggs and a bag of apples after — that's not two trips. That's one good day, and both of us exist to help you take it.

About the Market

Where it leads

The mission is the whole of it: build a community, and connect people. Producers with customers. Makers with audiences. A quilter with her next commission, a neighbor with the stand at the end of the road, an Ohioan in another state with a story from home. Everything here — the directory, The Market Map — is a means to that one end.

So the market grows the way communities do: the map fills in layer by layer, new markets and makers join each season, and visitors become regulars. Pull up a chair.

Get Listed

Three doors into the Market — one for producers, one for farmers markets, and one for the makers, who are nominated and never self-listed. Pick your door and fill in the form, and the form builds your submission packet right here on the page — nothing is sent from here. Copy the packet or download it, then email it to marketnews@theohiomarket.com. Every submission is personally reviewed before anything goes live, and listing is free.

What can you bring to the market?

That's the question this page asks. A farm, a Saturday market, a bench where something real gets made — the market is built out of what Ohioans bring to it. The ladder is the same one it has always been: a market stall today, a maker's table tomorrow, the artisan bench in time. Find your door below.

Track One — Producers: Submit a Listing

Farms, mills, quarries, growers, and makers of raw materials: give us the particulars and join the Producer Directory. One address rule, and it is firm: if you welcome customers in person, your street address is required — a listing that sends people to visit has to say where. Wholesale-only operations stay town-level, as they are now.

Submissions are reviewed by a person before anything appears on the site. Listing is free — and staying listed is free.

Track Two — Farmers Markets: Add or Correct a Market

Market managers: is your market missing from the map, or are its days and hours wrong in print? Send the particulars — a new market, or a correction to one already listed — and the record gets set right.

Submissions are reviewed by a person before anything appears on the site. Listing is free.

Track Three — Artisans: Nominations Only

The Artisan & Craft pillar has no self-listing — it stays hand-curated, on purpose. Makers are nominated, by customers, peers, juries, or readers, and admitted only when the record holds up:

  • Handmade in Ohio, in natural or traditional materials
  • Juried awards, museum or gallery recognition, or national press
  • A body of work, not a season of it

Nominating a community maker instead — a quilting grandmother who takes custom orders, say? Same door, warmer bar: finished work, neighbors who vouch, an open order book. Real work, not ribbons.

Nominations are reviewed by a person before anything appears on the site. Listing is free.

How it works, plainly: the forms above build your packet on this page and send nothing themselves. Email your packet to marketnews@theohiomarket.com — one reader personally reviews every submission before anything goes live. Listing is free — for producers, markets, and makers alike — and it stays free.
